  • about

KLAYM is a nonprofit, built on the idea to stimulate economic opportunities for young creatives from across Africa, notably photographers. Our aim is to provide a framework where aspiring creatives and artists, who are facing limited access to professional trainings, can improve their skills and experiences, develop projects, perform and exhibit. Each Nice magazine production is accompanied by a workshop series in photography, video production, graphic media design and creative writing aiming to critically engage the participant’s creative visual practice, in a dialogue with local and global visual culture and socio-political realities. We believe that to understand the true scale of Africa, it is essential to pay attention to its emerging voices, many of which explore a previously unrecognised depth of lived experiences in a place of rapid change.

  • workshops

KLAYM leads workshops for young professionals in media and design with local and international instructors in various countries in Africa. The aim is to strengthen the participants in their individual visions and narratives.

Each workshop not only sets a strong focus on practical aspects of conceiving and producing a story. It also trains the business skills of our participants and teaches them methods to establish longterm relationships with clients.

On a second level the workshops provide the young initiators with the infrastructure to create their own magazine showcasing the subjects they deal with in their work. Each workshop leads to a dedicated publication.

The goal of KLAYM is to ensure our participants expertise and support them with a higher global exposure.

  • publications

NICE is a publication series which showcases the creative works from young individuals from across Africa. The publication series offers a unique and thought-provoking glimpse at
everyday life within particular urban spaces. The work of Nice's young contributors highlight the webs of histories, politics, styles, cultural productions, aesthetic vocabularies and identifications that distinguish the urban spaces in which they live. Spaces that are in fact geographies of continual transformation, reinvented in the wake of globalization, the digital
revolution, and migration. Between past and future, analogue and digital, Nice shares and supports the voice of young Africans from city to city. Content and the overall appearance of Nice have been developed as part of a collaborative effort between the respective contributors and Klaym. The publication series NICE serves both as a portfolio for our contributors, and a stand alone magazine featuring refreshing new work from the African continent in photography, visual design and journalism.

Three issues have been published so far. N°1 from Pemba in Moçambique, N°2 from Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire, and N°3 from Katlehong in South Africa. Order your copy online with us or find the magazine in the store.
